M-Audio - Configure an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card in Linux

Updated:   |  M-Audio articles

In Linux Mint, after installing an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard, I expected to see the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard at Menu > Preferences > Sound. The M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard was not showing in Sound. In the Host OS (Windows 7), I updated the driver to the latest driver, version 6.0.8. On the Host OS (Windows 7), in the M-Audio Control Panel, the "about" tab would show data, except there was no listings under "pci card". Also, every other tab was completely blank/empty.

In the Host OS (Windows 7), I eventually noticed there was no listing of the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard in Device Manager. Device Manager had an exclamation point on SM Bus Controller. I downloaded the Chipset Driver for my motherboard, and installed the Chipset Driver. After the Chipset Driver was installed, Device Manager no longer has an exclamation point on SM Bus Controller, and the M-Audio Control Panel displayed data on all 5 tabs.

I mistakenly spent a few hours trying to get the M-Audio Sound Card to show in the Guest OS (Linux Mint). I eventually learned that the Guest OS passes the audio to the Host OS, which is to say that the Guest OS (Linux Mint) will not show the sound card. As long as the Host OS (Windows 7) has the sound card configured properly, all should be well. The Guest OS should pass audio to the sound card via the Host OS.
