Download and install Squid

  1. Download the Windows version of Squid Proxy Server from http://squid.diladele.com.
  2. Go to your Downloads folder and double click on the Squid installer.
  3. Select Run.
  4. Choose all of the default options and select Install.

By default, Squid is set to deny all HTTP traffic. Add the following in the C:\Squid\squid\squid.conf file to allow every PC in the LAN to use the Squid proxy server. Replace x.x.x.x/xx with the network IP address, such as 192.168.0.0/24.

acl localnet src x.x.x.x/xx
http_access allow localnet

If Windows firewall is enabled, allow HTTP (port 80) and HTTPS (port 443) traffic in Windows firewall.

You can now configure Squid as a web proxy server. However, a significant limitation is that Squid cannot be configured as a transparent proxy server on Windows. However, Squid can be configured as a transparent proxy server on Linux.
