Download and install Squid
- Download the Windows version of Squid Proxy Server from http://squid.diladele.com.
- Go to your Downloads folder and double click on the Squid installer.
- Select Run.
- Choose all of the default options and select Install.
By default, Squid is set to deny all HTTP traffic. Add the following in the C:\Squid\squid\squid.conf file to allow every PC in the LAN to use the Squid proxy server. Replace x.x.x.x/xx with the network IP address, such as 192.168.0.0/24.
acl localnet src x.x.x.x/xx
http_access allow localnet
If Windows firewall is enabled, allow HTTP (port 80) and HTTPS (port 443) traffic in Windows firewall.
You can now configure Squid as a web proxy server. However, a significant limitation is that Squid cannot be configured as a transparent proxy server on Windows. However, Squid can be configured as a transparent proxy server on Linux.
